2009 Ford Mustang Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing cover on 2009 Ford Mustang?
A: You must start service and repair operations on the timing cover by draining the cooling system and removing the crankshaft front oil seal. Detach the upper radiator hose together with both heater hose and lower radiator hose from the coolant pump. The bolt and accessory drive belt idler pulley needs removal after disconnecting the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor together with both wiring retainers. The first step involves removing the five cradle-to-engine front cover bolts from the engine block after which you must detach the five bolts together with their stud bolts from the front cover. The coolant bypass hose needs disconnection from its attachment point on the coolant pump before the engine front cover can be removed while keeping the coolant that collects at the front corners of the engine block cradle properly cleaned up. Extract engine oil by removing the oil pan drain plug while you should torque the plug to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft). During front cover installation you must use silicone gasket remover to clean the mating surfaces while employing either a plastic or wooden scraping instrument to prevent use of metal tools or abrasives. Fit the new front cover gasket but add silicone gasket and sealant on the oil pan and engine block surfaces and two locations on the cover. Thread stick to the stud bolts before installing them according to their original placement order. Then fit the front cover while connecting the coolant bypass hose to the thermostat housing. The five bolts and five stud bolts should be loosely installed while the Front Cover Aligner helps position the front cover before tightening these components to 19 Nm (168 lb-in). After your installation of the five engine block cradle-to-engine front cover bolts apply 14 Nm (124 lb-in) torque to them. First connect the CKP sensor followed by attaching the two wiring retainers before placing the accessory drive belt idler pulley together with its bolt. Tighten the bolt to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft). Install the crankshaft front oil seal after connecting the lower radiator hose, heater hose and upper radiator hose. The engineer needs to add fresh engine oil to the power unit followed by filling and bleeding the cooling system of the machine.
