2009 Ford Ranger Air Bag Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Safely Arm and Disarm an Air Bag in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) on 2009 Ford Ranger?
A: The proper procedure for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) depowering requires protective eyewear and it is essential to refrain from touching the electrical connectors of air bag or Safety Canopy® or side air curtain modules to stop accidental deployments that pose serious injury or death risks. Keep the restraints control module (RCM) with its original horizontal position when installed while the ignition is ON and avoid using memory saver devices. All vehicle accessories as well as ignition operations should first be disabled during this procedure. To access Smart Junction Box (SJB) inserts the RH lower cowl trim panel at fuse 8 (10A) from the RCM. At the ON ignition state monitor the air bag warning indicator for a minimum of thirty seconds while the correct fuse should remain constantly lit. The procedure should only continue after removing the fuse which requires replacement. After switching off ignition, disconnect the battery ground cable while waiting 1 minute to drain all back up power sources alongside disconnecting auxiliary batteries and power supplies. After turning the ignition to OFF the procedure starts with ignition ON after which you reinstall the RCM fuse 8 (10A) and the RH lower cowl trim panel. The battery ground cable must be reconnected only after verifying that passengers had left the vehicle and air bag modules face no possible obstructions. Once you turn on the ignition to then switch it off for ten seconds before reactivating it with the ON position you can verify the SRS through monitoring the air bag warning indicator as it should stay illuminated for about 6 seconds until it finally shuts off. A failure exists when the indicator neither illuminates nor stays lit or flashes at 5Hz. It takes the indicator as much as 30 seconds to show its illumination after switching on the ignition. In case of non-functioning the system will emit a five-beep pattern that signals the presence of a diagnostic and repairable fault. A professional must use a scan tool to remove all continuous errors from the RCM and Occupant Classification System Module (OCSM).
