2009 Ford Ranger Automatic Transmission Filter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the In-Line Automatic Transmission Filter for the 5R44E and 5R55E Transmissions on 2009 Ford Ranger?
A: The service procedure for 5R44E and 5R55E transmission in-line fluid filters starts with setting the vehicle to NEUTRAL gear position on a hoist. The installation of a new filter is required when undertaking transmission overhaul with in-line filter but no installation is needed when the filter was not included during manufacturing. There should be no filter installations in cases where the repairs do not involve the internal components. A new or factory-made transmission from Ford requires the installation of the provided in-line filter. First disconnect the lower cooler tube fitting as well as remove the transmission fluid cooler tube retainer clips. Ready the section of return cooler tube before preparing its cut ends for cleaning. Position the cooler tube fully inside the fitting before you tighten the ferrule connectors just to finger-tightness then proceed with another one and a half turns to properly position the ferrules. The filter equipped with a bypass valve must be set up by following the red arrow direction from the cooler to the transmission because improper placement can harm transmission internals. Use tubing with less than 60-degree bends or rubber hoses when installing the filter using appropriate sizes of clamps and hoses. Connect the lower tube fitting by applying 28 Nm (21 lb-ft) of torque while installing the clips to the retainer. Gas up one section of the transmission fluid pan and place the sticker before filling the transmission while confirming proper functioning and inspecting the filter for leaks. Use the same procedure for OTA cooler installations that involves initially verifying correct filter placement while following directions from the red arrow and finishing by clearing the pan and filling the transmission and leak check.
