2009 Lincoln MKS Camshaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the camshaft while ensuring safety and proper installation on 2009 Lincoln MKS?
A: A strict prohibition against smoking and open flames should be imposed near fuel-related components because the fuel mixtures remain highly combustible. The shipyard team should preserve cleanliness throughout engine maintenances to avoid introducing hazardous objects which could trigger engine breakdowns. The crankshaft should stay at its freewheeling position (9 o'clock dowel pin) until both camshafts get installed while checking valve clearance. Position the crankshaft with a counterclockwise rotation to the 9 o'clock direction. Engine oil coating of camshafts is necessary before they are placed onto the LH and RH cylinder heads with camshafts kept in a neutral configuration during assembly. Follow installation order to tighten the 8 camshaft caps and 16 bolts with a torque value of 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Begin valve clearance checks after new components installation with a feeler gauge before installing necessary valve tappets of correct size. The LH camshafts need to reach Top Dead Center (TDC) position before the Camshaft Holding Tool installation followed by assembly of the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) unit with exhaust camshaft sprocket and secondary timing chain alignment to the timing marks. The left-hand secondary timing chain tensioner lockpin must be removed before tightening the bolts in four carefully paced procedures. The installation must be performed twice for RH camshafts with precise alignment of all components during the tightening process. When the crankshaft reaches TDC at a clockwise 60-degree position install the primary timing chain that possesses correctly positioned colored links. Also place the lower LH primary timing chain guide followed by the tensioner and tighten both to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Install and align the primary timing chain tensioner correctly before tightening its components into position. The installation includes new VCT housing seals which must have their dowels completely inserted in the cylinder head prior to tightening both LH and RH VCT housings to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Put Motorcraft High Performance Engine RTV Silicone on the sealing surfaces of the engine front cover before installing it while tightening bolts to 3 Nm (27 lb-in) according to a specific sequence. Use two stages to install both engine mount bracket and remaining front cover bolts by applying proper thread sealer to engine mount studs. First install the crankshaft front seal followed by the crankshaft pulley and torques its bolt slowly in four stages. Clench the accessory drive belt tensioner and power steering pump to their position before attaching the required seals onto their spots with RTV silicone applied to the forward engine cover joints with the cylinder head. Use new gaskets when placing the RH and LH valve covers before you tighten them to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Replace the Power Steering Pressure tube bracket followed by coil-on-plug assemblies, wiring harness retainers and electrical connectors. Complete the installation by putting on the upper intake manifold with a new gasket and securely fasten the bolts at 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Then connect the Throttle Body electrical connector.
