2009 Lincoln MKX Catalytic Converter Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the right-hand catalytic converter on all on 2009 Lincoln MKX?
A: Service of the right-hand catalytic converter for all vehicles requires separate attention to the catalytic converter heat shield if needed. The service requires fresh fasteners and gaskets along with clean flange faces that must be ready before putting in the new gasket for sealing purposes. Position the vehicle with neutral gear on a hoist before you eliminate the catalyst monitor sensor from its position. Next, remove the exhaust Y-pipe. Index-mark all-wheel drive vehicle driveshafts because installation will require removal of four U-joint flange bolts to separate the front driveshaft before fixing it with mechanic's wire. Reinstall the driveshaft bolts to reach torque values of 70 Nm (52 lb-ft). The intermediate shaft requires removal before you tighten the two bolts securing the catalytic converter support brackets to the engine block to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Replacing the power steering gear heat shield requires removal of its two bolts which you should fasten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in) torque settings during installation. To reinstall the front-wheel drive components you should tighten the catalytic converter support bracket-to-engine block bolt and nut to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Start by removing two nuts along with the roll restrictor shield before uninstalling the roll restrictor bolt to rotate the engine forward while torquing the bolt to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft) for reinstallation. The installation process requires tightening the two bracket-to-right-hand catalytic converter bolts to 20 Nm (177 lb-in). After removing the four nuts your work includes discarding both the nuts and gasket from the right-hand catalytic converter. Prior to installing the new catalytic converter you must use new gaskets and nuts and studs with the nuts needing to be tightened to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). You should reverse the removal process to finish the work.
