2009 Lincoln Town Car Rack And Pinion Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2009 Lincoln Town Car?
A: Repair and service operations on the rack and pinion should begin with positioning the vehicle on a hoist while keeping it in NEUTRAL. Use an appropriate holding tool to fix the steering wheel where it faces forward. Steering column shaft rotation should be strictly prevented when the rack and pinion is disconnected because it could break the Clock Spring and reorientation of the intermediate shaft will require Clock Spring removal. The engine compartment requires the maintenance technician to detach the steering shaft from the rack and pinion through removal of the coupling bolt while torquing the bolt to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) before reassembly. To prevent stud rotation, you should use the hex-holding feature before removing the nuts that fasten outer tie-rod ends to wheel knuckles. Install these nuts with a torque of 80 Nm (59 lb-ft). Replacement of new O-ring seals is essential during line disconnection from the rack and pinion in order to avoid leakage. The procedure starts by eliminating the steering line clamp plate bolt while disconnecting pressure and return lines and replacing old O-ring seals with newly tightened ones to 17 Nm (150 lb-in). The installation process requires 103 Nm (76 lb-ft) tightness for the rack and pinion nuts next. The rack and pinion studs and unit need removal before tightening new installation fasteners to 20 Nm (177 lb-in). Every fitting should have a fresh O-ring seal during attachment. You must complete the procedure of filling the power steering system.
