How to service and repair the steering wheel on Ford Crown Victoria?

Service procedures of the steering wheel must begin with the wheels positioned at straight-ahead before removing the driver air bag module. The steering wheel bolt needs loosening but must stay in place until steering wheel separation from the steering column shaft to protect the column bearings. The Differential Bearing Remover tool will help you detach the steering wheel from the steering column shaft before you discard the steering wheel bolt. The new bolt needs to be secured with a torque of 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). A technician should both disconnect the electrical connector at the Clock Spring and remove the steering wheel while carefully rotating air bag harness wires through the steering wheel opening. The center rotor portion of the Clock Spring needs to be taped to its outer housing before the procedure starts to inhibit rotational movement. The complete installation requires the opposite order of removal steps.
