- Q: What precautions should be taken when servicing the Air Bag Control Module to prevent accidental deployment and ensure proper installation on Ford Expedition?A:The Restraints Control Module servicing process requires strict avoidance of adjustments in its horizontal mount position while the module remains connected and the ignition activated due to potential safety canopy accidents causing severe injuries or fatalities. The RCM and impact sensors should be replaced with new parts after checking whether their mounting areas suffered any damage from a crash because this deforms their original configuration. The use of memory saver devices should be avoided to reduce accidental air bag alarms. Since electronic modules react to static electricity it is essential to establish precautions that guard against contact. New RCM installation requires a step-by-step process of programmable module installation (PMI) accompanied by the selection of correct RCM to prevent spurious diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Begin SRS depowering before you remove either the center console or expose the three RCM pushnut retainers along with the cover if your vehicle lacks a center console. You can disconnect the small RCM electrical connector by pressing down on its retaining tab and then disconnect the large connector through the thumb tab's pivot motion which releases the connector position assurance lever away from the RCM. Unfasten the three bolts which secure the RCM unit. To guarantee operation quality install the RCM and impact sensor fasteners by applying torque to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft). The large electrical connector needs proper alignment before connection while the release of the connector position assurance lever must be complete.
