Ford Explorer Sport Trac Power Steering Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on a 4.0L engine on Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: Service and repair of the power steering pump on a 4.0L engine starts with removing power steering fluid from the reservoir by using an appropriate suction device. Place the vehicle on a hoist when it is positioned in a neutral gear. Then you need to remove the power steering pump pulley before moving to the pressure line bracket-to-engine bolt along with the power steering pump supply hose bracket bolt. First detach the power steering pump supply hose by releasing its clamp followed by hose disconnect then remove the pressure line-to-pump fitting while discarding the Teflon® seal. Use an appropriate suction device to remove the power steering pump while extracting its three bolts. A new Teflon® seal needs installation onto the pressure line fitting through use of the Teflon® Seal Installer Set. The power steering pump needs to be positioned properly then secured by tightening all three bolts to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). Attach the pressure line-to-pump fitting afterward tightening it to 65 Nm (48 lb-ft). Then install the power steering pump supply hose with its bracket bolt tightened to 11 Nm (97 lb-in). The power steering pump pulley installation process concludes with fitting the pressure line bracket-to-engine bolt while tightening it to 11 Nm (97 lb-in). The power steering system needs to be filled to finish the maintenance work.
