Ford Explorer Vapor Canister Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair the Vapor Canister on Ford Explorer?
A: Begin the repair and servicing procedure of the evaporative emission control canister by opening the liftgate and then lowering and removing the spare tire. The battery ground cable should be disconnected to prevent electrical sparks from starting the fuel vapors present in the area thus decreasing the risk of fires or explosions. The two chassis emission lines need disconnection from the evaporative emission tube. First remove all bolts from the evaporative emissions canister before extracting it together with its bracket assembly. The technician should first disconnect the canister vent solenoid electrical connector followed by removing the solenoid by disconnecting its hose before continuing to remove the evaporative emission canister purge sleeve and evaporative emission tube. The evaporative emission canister should be separated from its bracket in the last step of the procedure. After reversing all removal steps create a leak test for the evaporative emissions system before installation. A driver must finish the process by executing the evaporative emission repair verification drive cycle. All O-ring seals need to receive MERPOL(R) O-ring Seal Lubricant or an equivalent fluid that meets Ford specification ESE-M99B144-B.
