The first step for Ford 9.75-Inch Ring Gear axle shaft assembly maintenance requires hoisting a vehicle into neutral gear position. Start by unscrewing the 12 differential housing cover bolts until the cover and then the brake disc can be removed. Begin repair and service of the Ford 9.75-Inch Ring Gear axle shaft by eliminating the differential pinion shaft through bolt removal and subsequent shaft extraction. A compression force on the axle shaft enables removal of the U-washer before pulling out the axle shaft. Begin installation by putting grease on the oil seal lip and afterward insert the axle shaft but maintain the rubber O-rings intact within the U-washer grooves. Affix the U-washer onto the end of the axle shaft where the button exists before pulling the shaft in the outward direction. The original differential pinion shaft lock bolt needs threadlock application on its threads before positioning the differential case lock bolt hole with the differential pinion shaft hole to install a new lock bolt which must be tightened to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). Position the rear brake disc and maintain clean machined areas on both axle housing and differential housing cover while applying a continuous bead of new silicone sealant to the differential housing cover. This operation needs to complete within 15 minutes. The cover needs to be installed before or after 15 minutes of silicone application or the installation requires a new silicone application. When installing place the differential housing cover bolts at 45 Nm (33 lb-ft) torque. Traction-Lok axle maintenance requires destination of 118 ml (4 oz) friction modifier followed by removing the fill plug to add specified lubricant that should stop just below the bottom filler hole; finally replace and tighten the filler plug to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
