Ford Freestyle Air Bag Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What Precautions Should Be Taken When Servicing the Air Bag Sensor in the Second Row, C-Pillar on Ford Freestyle?
A: Safety glasses must always be used while servicing the side impact sensor in the C-pillar position of the second row to protect from potential air bag-related injuries. The vehicle sensor orientation must be correct for operational system performance and any deformation of sensor mounting equipment or wiring pigtail requires sensor replacement along with proper sensor positioning or immediate replacement of damaged SRS components even without air bag deployment. Using memory saver devices poses risks of personal injuries so they should be avoided. The RCM fuse removal will trigger the air bag warning lamp to illuminate while the Ignition Switch shows ON status. This normal condition means there are no SRS faults present. Full operation and no faults should exist in the SRS system prior to vehicle customer delivery. The repair work should start with new component installation yet if problems continue the first part should be reinstalled before running the diagnostic test again. The first step is to disable system power alongside panel and connector detachment from the side impact sensor. The proper torque value for the retaining bolt on the air bag side impact sensor is 12 Nm (9 lb-ft). During installation always torque the new bolt to this value. Make a note of the sensor position and locating tab position while ensuring that both C-pillar and side impact sensor mating surfaces remain free of debris and are clean. The system installation requires carrying out the removal steps in reverse order before enabling power to the system.
