Lincoln Leaf Spring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the leaf spring on Lincoln Mark LT?
    A:
First position the vehicle on a hoist with neutral while supporting the axle via a suitable jack. Lower the shock absorber by removing its nut and bolt then reinstall new components while torquing them to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.). Light duty vehicles require removing 4 U-bolt nuts together with the U-bolt plate and U-bolts before discarding both components. The procedure requires tightening four U-bolt nuts at specific torque levels beginning with 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.) then 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.) and 100 Nm (74 ft. lbs.) and ending at 133 Nm (98 ft. lbs.). Heavy duty vehicles require following the same removal procedure while tightening the U-bolt nuts in four stages starting from 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.) to 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.), 188 Nm (139 ft. lbs.) and finishing at 250 Nm (184 ft. lbs.). To gain access to the spring shackle-to-frame bolt users should lower the fuel tank but if working with the right rear spring they must first remove the muffler for spring-to-frame bolt access. Discard the spring-to-frame nut and bolt then install new ones that you should tighten to 350 Nm (258 ft. lbs.). Tighten the new installation of spring shackle-to-frame nut and bolt to 133 Nm (98 ft. lbs.) after discarding old parts. The axle should be positioned low enough to take out both spring and shackle components. You may need to remove the spring-to-shackle nut, bolt and spring shackle before discarding the nut and bolt while you tighten the new components to 133 Nm (98 ft. lbs.). For four wheel drive vehicles ensure that the space is placed between the axle and spring stack with the pointed nose pointing inward before installing while confirming that both spring-to-frame bolt and nut match the exploded view drawing.
