  Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on Lincoln LS?

  A: You must start timing chain repair by taking out the engine front cover along with the ignition pulse ring. Reinstall the crankshaft damper bolt and washer as the crankshaft needs clockwise turning to place the keyway at the nine o'clock position since counterclockwise rotation can harm engine parts because of crankshaft journal directional design. When reusing the RH timing chain tensioner parts you need to note their positions before placing a stiff wire or paper clip into the tensioner followed by removing the bolts and tensioner components along with the tensioner arm and timing chain and guide. Follow the same marking approach for the LH timing chain tensioner components and complete their removal by taking out the bolts together with the tensioner and timing chain. Distribution of the crankshaft keyway at the nine o'clock position is critical before installing the LH and RH intake and exhaust Camshafts into their neutral positions. Use a soft jawed vise to position the LH chain tensioner while using a small tool to keep the ratchet lock mechanism separate from the ratchet stem and carefully squeeze the tensioner piston until it reaches full bottoming depth. Position the crankshaft keyway at the 11 o'clock slot using clockwise rotation before installing the LH timing chain guide using shorter gold and longer black bolts as per the guide holes' configuration. The LH timing chain installation requires proper timing by which the gold-colored timing index link should match up with both the camshaft and crankshaft sprocket marks before putting in the LH tensioner arm and tensioner components using correct bolts. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the keyway reaches between two and three o'clock positions before fitting the RH timing chain while confirming the LH timing chain index links line up with the timing index marks. Slowly compress the RH timing chain tensioner while the ratchet lock mechanism sits away from the ratchet stem through use of a 1.5 mm (0.06 inch) wire or paper clip to retain the RH tensioner piston. Follow this order to install the RH chain guide and bolts and then the RH timing chain by placing the timing index links on the marks of the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. Position the RH tensioner correctly and secure its bolts before removing the wire or paper clip tying down the RH tensioner.
