The first step to repair or service the Brake Shift Interlock Actuator of a Column Shift vehicle requires depleting back up power to stop accidental air bag activation. The battery ground cable needs to be disconnected and users should wait a minimum of one minute before removing auxiliary batteries and power supplies on equipped vehicles. The service begins with
Clock Spring supplemental restraint removal followed by unscrewing the Clock Spring mounting bracket bolts on the steering column and retightening to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.) when reinstalling. You should place the wiring harnesses to the side after taking out the three screws while you disconnect the interlock actuator electrical connector. Removing two screws lets you set the actuator aside then using two bolts to separate the selector lever detent bracket before reinstallation with torque set to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.). Set the shift lock actuator aside from its place on the detent bracket for reinstallation and execute the installation steps in reverse order.
