Lincoln Town Car Tie Rod Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the inner tie rod on Lincoln Town Car?
A: The servicing and repair of inner tie rod starts with wheel removal and tire detachment followed by loosening the tie-rod jam nut until you tighten it to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) torque during reinstallation. A hex holding feature must be used to stop the stud from turning when taking out the nut and the outer tie-rod end should be detached from the wheel knuckle using a torque setting of 80 Nm (59 lb-ft). Write down the number of outer tie-rod end turns as they will be needed during reassembly before you remove this component. First disconnect the tie-rod jam nut then for those who need to fix the right-side inner tie rod it becomes essential to stretch the bellows boot on the left-side for steering gear control. Detach both clamps from the bellows boot while taking off the boot itself. The steering gear must be set at center position while using an appropriate crowfoot wrench to secure the rack gear flat area when installing the inner tie rod. Tighten this rod to 100 Nm (74 lb-ft) torque specifications after installation. The removal of abrasive material should be complete because it can cause damage to the steering gear while avoiding twists of the bellows boot for protection. The inner tie-rod groove should receive an application of grease before the bellows boot placement while ensuring appropriate positioning on the steering gear housing bead and inside the inner tie-rod channel. The procedure for removal inversion leads to part cleaning for reusable components before new part installation. Checking and readjusting the front toe completes the procedure.
