Mercury Montego Brake Master Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the brake master cylinder on Mercury Montego?
A: Prior to fixing or maintaining the brake master cylinder start by shutting down the engine then press the brake pedal several times to empty the Brake Booster vacuum. First disconnect the battery tray followed by the air cleaner assembly. A suitable suction device will drain the brake master cylinder reservoir while disconnecting electrical connector and Brake Lines from the master cylinder for a 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.) torque installation. Seal brake lines through the use of covers while installing ports on the master cylinder. The master cylinder-to-booster seal needs to be separated from the master cylinder during removal. Then separate and discard the two brake master cylinder-to-brake booster nuts until the master cylinder can be extracted. This cylinder requires a torque of 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) when replacement occurs. When reversing the removal steps you need to bleed the brake system before conducting operational checks. Hydraulic brake fluid should always be DOT 3-certified to avoid brake components damage and users must handle brake fluid carefully by keeping it away from eyes and painted surfaces and plastics.
