Mercury Monterey Heater Core Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Heater Core on Mercury Monterey?
    A:
Service operations for the heater core start with draining the cooling system and positioning the front seats in their maximum rear position. Start the heater core service by disabling the supplemental restraint system then moving to remove the Wiper Motor assembly along with dismantling the windshield side garnish mouldings and both A-pillar trim panels. Remove heater hoses from the heater core while lowering the glove compartment. The first step entails removing the three lower bolts from the steering column opening panel with 8 Nm (71 lb-in) torque settings before reinstalling these bolts; afterward disconnect the cover and upper bolts securing the steering column opening panel cover. These upper bolts should also be tightened to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). The following procedure requires users to take off the steering column opening panel reinforcement and four storage console pin-type retainers and the storage console itself. The technician must detach the rear seat floor duct adapter before removing the upper instrument panel finish panel and LH lower and upper instrument panel bolts which should be tightened to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) when reinstalling them. Disassemble the vehicle by first removing the upper instrument panel bolts, upper instrument panel cowl bolt (torque to 5 Nm (44 lb-in during installation) and the four instrument panel center support brace bolts which should be tightened to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) during reinstallation. LH instrument panel support bracket bolt needs removal but requires tightening to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) while installing (tightening followed by loosening the RH instrument panel bolts halfway before full removal). Move toward the glove compartment opening to eliminate the right-hand instrument panel support bracket bolt and shift the left-hand instrument panel sideways from the dash panel. First disconnect the heater core and evaporator core housing support brace nut then bolt and finally take off the support brace. First remove the floor duct and corresponding four screws and then remove the heater core cover with its seven screws. The wire harness must be detached from the heater core cover before the cover and the heater core can be removed. The service completion requires performing the removal steps in reverse order while filling the engine cooling system.
