    Q:
How to service and repair the catalytic converter on Mercury Cougar? Posted by Customer
    A:
The first step to repair the three-way catalytic converter (TWC) is to remove its heat shield followed by disconnecting TWC from the manifold. Take the necessary measures to lift and stabilize the vehicle before unclipping the heated oxygen sensor electrical wiring connector. The service begins with separating the hanger insulator from the flange connection. Proceed to remove both the flexible pipe assembly along with the TWC by first untightening the nuts followed by nut and bolt removal. Begin with TWC and flexible pipe assembly placement before installing the nut and bolt and finally tightening the bolts. Check the hanger insulators for wear and replace damaged parts then treat all hanger insulators with Myrpol Lubricant D7AZ-I9553-AA or an equivalent solution that adheres to Ford standard ESEM99B 144-B. Apply a new gasket and fasten nuts loosely before securing the flange connection. Lower the vehicle while avoiding the application of jointing compound anywhere ahead of the catalytic converter before tightening the nuts. First raise and support the vehicle before reinstalling the heat shield and following with delivering a snug torque on the nuts and attaching the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector with proper wiring position maintenance.

    Q:
How to service a three-way catalytic converter on Mercury Mystique? Posted by Customer
    A:
Service procedures for the three-way catalytic converter start by uninstalling the heat shield component and at the same time removing the catalytic converter from its connection to the manifold. Start the service by raising and supporting the vehicle and by disconnecting the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector through disconnecting cables and unclipping wiring. First disconnect the flange connection and exhaust hanger insulator before removing the catalytic converter by unscrewing support bracket retaining bolts and removing the clamp bolt and finally taking out the converter and discarding its gasket with nuts. Prior to installation check exhaust hanger insulators for damage trends and change the ones that are damaged. Position the catalytic converter in place before installing the clamp bolt together with tightening the support bracket retaining bolts. Fasten the flange after installing proper specification exhaust hanger insulators and new gaskets and nuts using their loose connections. Lower the car while avoiding jointing compound application within the area in front of the catalytic converter before tightening the manifold to catalytic converter nuts. Apply the heat shield before you support the vehicle to connect the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector and fasten the wiring by clipping it into position before lowering the vehicle.
