Only selected automatic transmission fluid meant for specific transmission and converter systems should be used when inspecting torque converter contamination since water-based cleaners together with mineral spirits might result in damage. The torque converter drain plug along with its seal should be discarded and you must install a new drain plug assembly if they are equipped. Placing the converter on a bench and pouring an examination fluid through both an absorbent white tissue or paper filter serves to inspect its state. The torque converter fluid should remain red in color without signs of brown or black tint and any foreign smell indicates overheating due to clutch disc or band failure. Observe particles on the tissue while checking for the fluid level indicator signs of antifreeze or gum or varnish. Engine coolant or water contamination together with particles will require the complete replacement of the torque converter. You should drain the torque converter transmission fluid while keeping it free of contamination to replace it with fresh automatic transmission fluid in amount of 1.9 liters (2 quarts). After manual fluid agitation continue with a complete drain of the fluid.

A new or remanufactured torque converter must be installed if a malfunction has been confirmed through complete diagnostic procedures, or in cases where stud(s) on the converter, the impeller hub, or bushing are damaged. Additionally, installation is required if there are signs of discoloration due to overheating, or evidence of transmission assembly or fluid contamination resulting from major metallic failure, multiple clutch or clutch plate failures, significant component wear leading to metallic contamination, or the presence of internal torque converter contamination.
