    Q:
What Precautions and Installation Steps Are Needed for the Clock Spring Assembly on Mercury Mountaineer? Posted by Customer
    A:
Wear safety glasses before servicing the Clock Spring assembly since accidental air bag deployment can result in injury. Effective handling of live air bag modules requires positioning the trim cover toward the opposite direction of your body. Thorough hand washing must follow air bag deployment to eliminate sodium hydroxide left on the skin. air bag module connectors should never be probed since deployment will occur. Replace air bag modules with new ones when their trim covers become damaged and do not attempt to repaint them. Memory saver devices must also be avoided. Before removing the driver air bag module and steering wheel inspect that road wheels are in a straight position while the system power is disabled. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws from the lower instrument panel cover before carefully taping the Clock Spring to prevent its movement during removal step. Avoid damage to gear selector boot while removing it by handling gently and then proceed to remove both lower and upper steering column shrouds. Detach the multi-function switch from the Clock Spring after removing its electrical connector along with the retaining tab. Remove steering column bolts to detach the Clock Spring before checking the bracket for damage. New installation requires a Clock Spring bracket only when necessary so use screws to fasten the part properly. You should receive a new Clock Spring in the center position. When installing it you need to guard the rotor from movement and pull out the key before continuing. When centralizing the Clock Spring maintain pressure on the outer housing while rotating the rotor first counterclockwise until you feel resistance followed by a clockwise rotation of three turns to reach the center position. Join the electrical wiring connectors while orienting them towards the steering column structure and place the Clock Spring in its designated position. Install the multi-function switch and insert the upper and lower steering column shrouds, gear selector boot then cover the instrument panel. The finishing steps include placing the steering wheel and installing the driver air bag module while connecting every necessary electrical connector as well as matching the special Clock Spring connections exactly before tightening the driver air bag module bolts before system activation.
