The fuel level sensor service requires safety precautions by staying away from both smoking and carrying lighted tobacco products and keeping flames away from fuel components since these materials can ignite flammable mixtures that can result in severe personal injury. Service staff must withdraw all personal electronic devices from the work area. Relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting any fuel tubing equipment because the system maintains high pressure after engine shutdown. Disconnection of the battery ground cable should always occur during maintenance of both EVAP system and fuel-related components. Engineers can service the fuel level sensor due to its replaceable fuel level sender feature. First elevate the vehicle to a hoist and set its position to neutral and afterwards drain the fuel system pressure and unplug the battery ground wire. The fuel tank filler cap needs to be turned counterclockwise until it disengages however removing it during tank fullness will leak out approximately one-eighth of the fuel. Feed the dripping hose tube into the fuel tank filler pipe while the fitting directs down to the fuel tank spout opening for draining the fuel out. The Fuel Storage Tanker must be attached to the hose to empty fuel until the sensor mounting flange remains below the fuel level. Taurus and Sable model owners should remove their rear seat lower cushions after Sable owners must raise the load floor while releasing the two floor support brackets. Remove the fuel level sensor access cover then clean both the sensor connections together with their surrounding area before disconnecting the electrical connector. The area around the work should receive several pieces of absorbent toweling to collect any leaking fuel. You should handle the Fuel Tank Sender Unit Wrench gently to protect the sensor during lock ring removal because this step leads to lifting the sensor from the tank and unfastening the quick connect coupling. You must eliminate the old O-ring before applying fresh engine oil to the new one which will go into the installation. The installation process requires using both a new lock ring and O-ring seal for which you must guide the arrows between the sensor and tank to match before clamping the lock ring at the stop tabs.

Insert the Fuel Draining Hose into the fuel tank filler pipe until the fitting enters the fuel tank spout, then attach the Fuel Storage Tanker to the hose to remove as much fuel as possible.
