Safety requires you to stay away from smoking or carrying lighted tobacco or open flames near fuel-related components during the servicing of fuel gauge sender and fuel pump module because highly flammable mixtures exist. All personal electronic devices need proper storage to protect against ignition. The process of relieving fuel system pressure before disconnecting fuel components prevents accidental fuel spraying and requires the disconnection of the battery ground cable during evaporative emission system and fuel-related component work. A serviceable fuel level sender exists within the fuel pump module. All-wheel drive vehicles need to rest on a hoist in neutral position. Start your procedures by draining the fuel system pressure and unplug the battery cable. Begin the procedure by removing the rear seat lower cushion together with the fuel pump module access cover. Users must first clean the fuel pump module connections before disconnecting both the electrical connector and fuel vapor tube assembly and fuel tank jumper tube quick connect coupling. The fuel storage tanker should be used to extract one-fourth of the tank capacity from a full tank which would lower the fuel position beneath the pump module foundation. The process for all-wheel drive vehicles demands unscrewing three fuel pump module shield nuts which need to be tightened to 9 Nm (80 lb-in) when reinstalling them. Install a suitable lift device below the fuel tank before removing the evaporative emission canister along with its driveshaft. Before removing installation caps from the pump module ports, disconnect first the fuel tank jumper tube while simultaneously uninstalling both front fuel tank strap bolts. The front part of the fuel tank requires partial lowering and removal of the fuel pump module shield but the tank must return to its original position before removing the pump module to prevent fuel leak. Use the Fuel Tank Sender Unit Wrench to uninstall the lock ring while maintaining safety of the pump module structure. Remove the pump module from the tank space while disconnecting its internal fuel tube quick connect coupling(s) until the complete removal of the unit. Check the flange along with O-ring seal contact points since replacement of either module or tank might be required due to damage. To install a new O-ring seal consumers must apply engine oil before adding a new lock ring. They should check that alignment arrows match between the pump module and fuel tank before tightening the lock ring to touch the stop tabs on the tank.
