Front Pads

Before servicing or repairing front brake pads take necessary precautions against brake fluid polyglycol ethers and polyglycols since eye contact needs immediate medical attention and extensive hand washing will be needed after handling. Eyes that come into contact with brake fluid need immediate treatment by running water for 15 minutes followed by medical help for sustained irritation. Drinking water followed by vomiting is the first step when you swallow this substance but you must immediately find professional medical aid. Brake fluid must be drained from the master cylinder until enough capacity remains to absorb fluid released by the piston movement in caliper operation. Support the vehicle at an elevation before taking out the tire-wheel assembly. Users should disconnect the speed sensor wiring from front brake hose before removing the two caliper bolts. A convenient wire secured beneath the chassis should hold the disc brake caliper instead of allowing it to dangle from the front brake hose. E-150 vehicles require caliper removal from the front wheel spindle but E-250, E-350 and E-450 models need disc brake caliper removal from the front caliper anchor plate. Check for any brake fluid leakage in the disc brake caliper because a leaking unit needs immediate rebuilding or replacement. The pad thickness should be verified because pads that extend beyond the metal backing plate or rivets are past their replacement threshold. Also inspect pads for contamination by avoiding installation of oil- or grease-contaminated pads. Replace either brake components immediately when their thickness falls beneath the established minimum standards. A C-clamp holding a brake pad can be used to pressurize the piston and bottom it within the caliper bore yet pad replacement is unnecessary for original pads. To prevent deterioration of the caliper sleeve boots, avoid petroleum-based lubricants and instead fill the rubber caliper sleeve boots with Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A (Motorcraft WA-10) or an equivalent silicone compound meeting Ford specification ESE-MIC171-A. Install the disc brake caliper by positioning it in the front wheel spindle (E-150) or in the front disc brake caliper anchor plate (E-250, E-350, E-450), then install and tighten the disc brake caliper bolts. For speed sensor wires connect them back to the front brake hose and after applying the tire with wheel assembly.

Remove the brake master cylinder filler cap and check the brake fluid level in the reservoir, removing fluid until it is half full.

Inspect the rear disc brake caliper for leaks, and if any are found, disassembly will be necessary.

Inspect the caliper for any brake fluid leakage, the pad thickness to ensure it is not worn past the specified limit, and check for contamination on the pads.

Install a new rear brake disc.
