A suitable tool is required to remove the automatic transmission shift lever trim ring before starting MKX vehicle automatic transmission shift lever service and repair operations. Use the tool to elevate the armrest before taking out the center console trim cover. Take out the two fasteners first before setting aside the power outlet trim cover. You should never place pressure between the manual control lever and the automatic transmission shift lever cable bracket to stop breaking the cable. Detach the automatic transmission shift lever cable end from the automatic transmission shift lever while freeing the two tabs before removing the housing from the automatic transmission shift lever cable. Disconnect the automatic transmission shift lever electrical connector while you remove the bolts that fasten the automatic transmission shift lever to its place. The installation process requires placing the automatic transmission shift lever first before securing it into place with bolts that need a torque of 12 Nm (106 lb-in). The electrical connector should be reconnected after making sure the automatic transmission shift lever cable rests securely in its bracket by pressing it down until a click sound is heard. Check the cable security by pulling the cable back. Lay the automatic transmission shift lever in REVERSE position before removing the automatic transmission shift lever cable from the manual control lever. Place the automatic transmission shift lever cable ending to the control lever after that align the automatic transmission shift lever to the DRIVE position. Reinstall the power outlet trim and center console trim before setting MKX vehicles with their automatic transmission shift lever trim ring. Adjust the manual control lever to DRIVE by first rotating it clockwise until it stops before counterclockwise movement for one detent. Users can unlock the adjuster through latch prying then sliding the tab over the opening. Adjust the automatic transmission shift lever cable end to match the manual control lever position while installing it onto the ball stud. After the locking tab of the adjuster gets unlocked you should join the automatic transmission shift lever cable's ending piece to the manual control lever and place the release tab back to lock the adjuster. The system should function properly by allowing the vehicle to start only in PARK and NEUTRAL and produce illumination from the reverse lamps when shifting to REVERSE.
