A service and repair procedure for the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) Sensor requires a vehicle with NEUTRAL gear positioned on a hoist. Disconnect the OSS sensor. Before removing the OSS sensor on four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles clean the surrounding area from foreign matter while first taking off the bolt and then the sensor itself. Proceed for OSS sensor servicing of RWD vehicles by first cleaning around the sensor area then removing the bolt before taking out the sensor unit. Installation requires a clean automatic transmission fluid as a lubricant for the O-ring before mounting the OSS sensor to the 4WD vehicle and fastening it with the bolt until tightness reaches 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.). Reinstallation of RWD automobiles follows exactly the same approach. The last step involves the connection of the OSS sensor electrical connector.

The service and repair procedure of Transmission Speed Sensor in a 4R100 Automatic Transmission starts with hoisting the vehicle in NEUTRAL position. Place an elevated transmission jack on the transmission after loosening transmission insulator-to-crossmember support nuts but leaving them securely fastened. Start by removing the crossmember bolts and then the two bolts which secure the heat shield to the transmission support crossmember to detach the crossmember. To access the sensors you need to lower the rear of the transmission then unplug the corresponding electric cable of the damaged sensor. To avoid contamination while working on the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor, start by removing its bolt then uninstall the sensor. You should remove the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor when needed by taking out its bolt. The Heated Oxygen Sensor connector should be put to the side while working on this step. The installation process should begin with O-ring lubrication followed by reinstalling the OSS and securing it with its bolt. Succeeding installation of the TSS device after HO2S connector repositioning, utilize lubrication on its O-ring and mount the TSS using its bolt. Expand the electrical connector of the affected sensor before reinstalling the crossmember to the transmission mount by using one nut for support while lifting the transmission to match crossmember bolt positions. Fasten the sensors and their bolts while tightening all installed nuts solidly. For the last step reinstall each of the two exhaust heat shield-to-crossmember bolts along with removing the high-lift transmission jack before lowering the vehicle.

Service technicians should place all vehicles equipped with TorqShift transmission on a hoist in NEUTRAL before starting to repair or service the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor. Disconnect the OSS sensor connector. Check that the sensor area of transmissions with fixed flanges contains no foreign materials before unscrewing the bolt to remove the OSS sensor. To remove the OSS sensor from transmissions without a fixed flange one should perform initial cleaning activities before uninstalling the sensor by removing its bolt first then the sensor itself. Prior to installing the OSS sensor onto transmissions with a fixed flange users must first apply transmission fluid to the O-ring before installing the sensor while securing it with a bolt tightened to 9 Nm (80 lb-in). For installing an OSS sensor in transmissions without a fixed flange you should use the identical installation process. Hereafter connect the OSS sensor connector.

Start your work on transmission speed sensors by supporting the vehicle at NEUTRAL in a hoist position. To replace the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor start by disconnecting its electrical connector followed by removing its sensor bolt then extracting the OSS sensor. Service the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor by first detaching its electrical connector then unscrewing the sensor bolt followed by taking out the TSS sensor. To install begin by applying lubricant to the O-ring seal before inserting the TSS sensor and then fasten it with a torque of 11 Nm (9 ft. lbs.) on the sensor bolt before reconnecting the electrical connector. First apply lubrication to the OSS sensor O-ring seal before putting it in position and tightening the sensor bolt to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.) while reconnecting the electrical connector.

First, raise and support the vehicle.

Disconnect the electrical connector from the OSS sensor.

Ensure the vehicle is in NEUTRAL and positioned on a hoist.

Remove the bolt securing the sensor and take out the sensor itself.

Remove the bolt securing the OSS sensor and then remove the sensor itself.

Position the vehicle in NEUTRAL on a hoist.

Remove the 2 wire harness retainers from the rear crossmember and set the wire harness aside.

Lubricate the O-ring and install the new intermediate shaft and turbine shaft combination speed sensor, securing it with the bolt tightened to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

Secure it with the bolt tightened to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

Reconnect the electrical connector, raise the transmission back into position, and align the crossmember with the transmission insulator and retainer, loosely installing the nut.

Next, remove the bolt securing the TSS and intermediate shaft combination speed sensor, followed by the removal of the sensor itself.

Reverse the removal procedure.

Remove the TSS sensor bolt and the sensor itself.

Ensure the vehicle is in NEUTRAL and positioned on a hoist.
