Intake Valve

All valve maintenance activities start with component examination and cleaning which includes inspection of crankshaft and crankshaft bearings alongside camshaft and crankshaft bearings and cylinder head and valve train elements along with valves, seats and springs. Service procedures also cover piston components and crankshaft bearings and cylinder block and bore examination. The subassembly service work strives to repair cylinder head units and piston assemblies as well as connecting rod assemblies with their piston pin components. Among the tasks included in engine service and repair are engine disassembly followed by engine assembly. A component without an independent service procedure in the manufacturer documentation means they did not publish one which can be found in engine service and repair documents.

Measuring the diameter of intake and exhaust valve stems stands as the first step before valve service and repair. New components need installation if any diameter measurements deviate from specifications. Perform an inspection of the valve areas that includes checking for grooves or scoring at the valve stem end together with inspecting pits, grooves or scores on the valve face and edge and looking for burning, erosion and warpage and cracking on the valve head along with verifying wear on the valve margin. After performing valve or seat grinding ensure to check the valve clearance before inspecting the valve head-seat interaction while verifying valve angle positioning and seat margin width compliance. Check the valve face and seat for abnormalities and measure the valve seat width before proceeding to grinding it when necessary. After grinding the valve seats measure the widths and check the valve spring installed length by applying shims when required to maintain the right spring length. The last step includes using the Valve Seat Runout Gauge to evaluate valve seat runout.
