2000 Ford E-150 Econoline Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Semi-Floating Axle Shaft of a Dana System on 2000 Ford E-150 Econoline?
A: Start adding service to the semi-floating axle of Dana systems by mounting the vehicle on a hoist or using jacks to lift the rear end before securing it using safety stands positioned under frame rails. The first task requires removing both the rear wheel along with its attached tire followed by extraction of the brake drum. Discharge the lubricating fluid from the differential housing through its cover opening before cleaning gasket material from both surfaces. The service provider must discard Loctite coated differential pinion shaft lock screws with a 5/32-inch hexagram socket but they can reinstall torque prevailing screws with a 12-point drive head four times. Open the differential pinion shaft by removing its lock screw and slip-fit design will allow manual removal. Push the axle shaft flanged end toward the center but do it carefully because damaging the wheel bearing oil seal and rotating the differential side gears may cause the differential pinion gears and thrust washers to drop out. Reinstall the differential pinion shaft along with the old lock screw in a finger-tight manner so that the gears cannot rotate. To install the component start by removing the pinion shaft and lock screw again before aligning the differential side gear with the axle shaft splines while pushing it into the axle tube. Fitting the U-washer requires pulling the axle shaft until it securely attaches to the differential side gear. Secure the differential pinion shaft lock screw hole while using clean threads to align it with the differential case as well as correctly placo thrust washers before securing the new Lock screw. The differential housing cover and housing require cleaning with a suitable solvent before receiving a continuous application of Ultra Silicone Sealant F7TZ-19554-AA or equivalent. Two bolts should be inserted at eight o'clock and two o'clock positions to start the cover installation procedure before alternately tightening all remaining bolts to reach 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) torque for Grade 5 or 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque for Grade 8 bolts. The service procedure requires a one-hour cure time followed by filling the axle with specified lubricant and in case of limited-slip axles a prior addition of 21 C.L. (7 ounces) Additive Friction Modifier C8AZ-1911546-A or equivalent followed by 3.0L (6.3 pints) of the specified rear axle lubricant. Conclude the procedure by installing the brake drum as well as wheel and tire assembly before lowering the vehicle.
