2000 Ford Expedition Air Bag Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How Can You Safely Depower and Repower the Air Bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) on 2000 Ford Expedition?
A: Wearing safety glasses during air bag module handling will help prevent dangerous accidents while working to depower and repower the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Any attempt to probe the connectors of the air bag module will result in unwanted deployment along with personal harm. When servicing a seat with integrated side air bag and safety belt pretensioner ensure the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) operates in depowered mode. The air bag warning system will illuminate the lamp when RCM fuse F22 (10A) is taken out while the ignition is ON as this is standard operation and shows no signs of failure. You should start by turning all vehicle accessories off while switching off the ignition. The central junction box (CJB) situated below the instrument panel left side requires its cover to be unscrewed before the removal of RCM fuse F22. Check that the air bag indicator stays lit throughout the 30-second duration of the ignition ON stage. Correction of the RCM fuse might be necessary if the indicator fails to illuminate. The system requires a full deactivation through turning off the ignition combined with disconnecting and waiting for at least one minute on the battery ground cable (14301) while disabling any auxiliary batteries. All SRS components need to be connected when performing repowering while removing any restraint system diagnostic tools. The procedure includes switching from ignition OFF to ON position while you reinstall the RCM fuse F22 before closing the cover. Check that both occupants and objects away from air bag modules before attaching the battery ground cable. Once you finish connecting the battery ground cable you must check the SRS operation by activating the ignition while waiting 10 seconds and then activating it again. Testing of the indicator system requires the indicator to glow steadily for six seconds before disappearing. The air bag warning indicator will fail to turn on or might stay active or continually blink when faults occur but could play warning alerts. The repair of SRS faults must begin with a diagnosis and every continuous DTC needs to be cleared from the RCM through a scan tool.
