2000 Ford Focus Clock Spring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Clock Spring Assembly in an Air Bag-Equipped System on 2000 Ford Focus?
A: At the beginning of Clock Spring assembly repair or spiral cable service always disconnect the battery ground cable followed by waiting one minute to disconnect supplemental restraint system electrical connectors to avoid premature air bag deployment that may cause injuries. Safety glasses are mandatory during air bag-equipped vehicle repair and the air bag module should be handled only with the trim cover positioned away from your body to protect from potential injuries. Place live air bag modules on surfaces with the trim cover in the upper position while keeping them away from possible knocks and falls. The repair process should lead to new part installation exclusively for cases where the original components show damage or fail diagnostic tests. The electrical connectors of air bag modules and supplemental restraint system connectors must never be probed by humans. Once complete disconnect the driver air bag module and steering wheel and instrument panel lower panel through the process of screw removal along with retaining clip detachment. To access the steering column upper shroud use a thin-bladed screwdriver to pop off the clips after which the steering column shrouds can be removed by loosening the locking lever followed by unscrewing the retaining screws while the ignition key stays out of the ignition. To disconnect the air bag sliding contact, push each retaining tang before sliding the switching piece off from the air bag and then disconnect the sliding contact electric connector with a locking tang release. Take off the air bag sliding contact by disengaging all its release tangs but maintain the proper position of the spacing collar. Safe procedures must be observed during installation of the air bag sliding contact while ensuring both retaining tangs lock definitely into position and confirming correct spacing collar placement. Install the multifunction switches with the steering column shrouds and lock the column before attaching air bag sliding contact electrical connector while installing screws. Bolt down the instrument panel lower section after securing the retaining clip while adding screws to it. Use a counterclockwise rotation of the air bag sliding contact while feeling resistance then proceed with clockwise rotation until the arrow points to the raised "V" section at the 12 o'clock position. Perform the centralization procedure once more when unsure about the method to prevent component failure which could block air bag release. Perform installation of the steering wheel only when road wheels are positioned straight ahead. Customarily repeat the centralizing process for the sliding contact if any interruption occurs between centralization and steering wheel installation or if the vehicle stays unattended. Install the driver air bag module and re-establish the battery ground cable as the final procedure.
