- Q: How to service the thermostat on 2000 Ford Ranger?A: Service of the thermostat requires an initial draining of the cooling system. After disconnecting the heater return hose at the thermostat housing the technician must remove the engine coolant temperature sensor and the water temperature sensor. The next step requires removal of the upper radiator hose from its outlet connection. The water thermostat can be removed after extracting the elbow away from the cylinder head by removing bolts from its position. It is normal for the thermostat tabs to not fit perfectly with the housing because they will naturally secure themselves against the head during installation. Follow these steps to install the thermostat into the water outlet connection by applying manual pressure on the housing while fitting the tabs inside the housing recesses. Insert the water outlet housing onto the head with the thermostat while holding the thermostat in position. Reposition the constant tension clamp according to its original position and attach the upper radiator hose to the water outlet connection. After reconnecting the engine coolant temperature sensor and the water temperature sensor you must reinstall the constant tension clamp into its original position before connecting the heater return hose. Finally, fill the cooling system.
