2000 Mercury Sable Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing cover on 2000 Mercury Sable?
A: The first steps to service and fix the timing cover start with draining engine coolant while also disconnecting the battery ground cable. Start by removing then dismantling the engine anti-roll strut brace after unscrewing the nuts and then removing the engine roll restrictor with its bolts. Begin service and repair of the timing cover by first removing the coolant expansion tank followed by unbolted water pump pulley nuts. Begin the timing cover service by disconnecting the lower radiator hose after relocating its clamp then removing the hose itself. Pull the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor out by first detaching it then unfastening its bolts. Lower the vehicle after removing the oil pan first. Disable the generator before uninstalling the generator support bracket with its nut and bolt to proceed with taking out the generator by extracting the stud bolt. Start by taking off the bolts securing both accessory drive belt idler pulley and tensioner and then remove the A/C compressor bracket by unfastening its nut and bolt. Disconnect the heater hose by repositioning the clamp and disconnecting the hose. After that remove the water pump pulley by taking off its holding bolts. To service the engine front cover with water pump as one piece operators must first remove all bolts securing the front cover together with the gasket then throw out the front cover gasket. Installation requires professionals to clean all sealing areas before placing a new front cover gasket followed by engine front cover and water pump assembly installation. Install the indicated bolts by applying Pipe Sealant with Teflon D8AZ-19954-A or equivalent material meeting the Ford specification WSK-M2G350-A2. Then, attach the water pump pulley bolts and water pump pulley. First install the A/C compressor bracket then position the accessory drive belt tensioner together with the idler pulley. Lastly connect the heater hose before installing the bracket clamp. Place the stud bolt on the generator before installation of the generator support bracket with bolt and nut and make the generator connection. After hoisting the vehicle install the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor by placing it correctly while securing bolts and connecting the connector. Start by connecting the lower radiator hose then readjusting its clamp before installing the oil pan and crankshaft damper and coolant expansion tank and engine anti-roll strut and its brace. Complete the task by connecting the battery while performing cooling system filling and bleeding procedures.
