2001 Ford Expedition Intake Manifold Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the intake manifold on a 4.6L engine on 2001 Ford Expedition?
A: Service of the 4.6L engine intake manifold requires disconnecting the battery cable and relieving pressure from the fuel system. A service of the 4.6L intake manifold begins with draining the engine cooling system while removing the air cleaner component along with its outlet tube. The hose clamp requires compressing to slide off the upper radiator hose while the accelerator cable snow shield can be removed by unboltng it. The throttle body cam requires detaching of the accelerator cable and the speed control actuator cable and removal of the accelerator return spring. First disconnect the bolts which secure the accelerator cable bracket before placing the bracket along with the cables in a safe place. You must disconnect the main vacuum harness along with the throttle position sensor and the engine vacuum regulator connectors and also remove the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line together with the vapor management valve vacuum line and differential pressure feedback EGR sensor electrical connector. The brake booster vacuum line requires disconnection along with the bracket after unfastening the brake booster vacuum line nut while also disconnecting fuel lines and removing the idle air control motor electrical connector. The work begins by placing the EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube to one side and disconnecting the upper fitting while loosening the lower fitting followed by unscrewing four bolts from the throttle body adapter. First remove the positive crankcase ventilation hose before moving the power steering reservoir out of the way by unbolted both its upper and lower sections. Remove the eight fuel injectors and ignition coils together with the generator and disconnect the heater hose as well as both radio interference capacitors. Disconnect and remove the upper intake manifold by taking off its nine bolts and water thermostat while also disconnecting the intake manifold tuning valve connector and disposing the gaskets. The intake manifold tuning valve requires positioning before the installation of bolts on clean sealing surfaces using a plastic scraper. First tighten all bolts on the lower intake manifold to 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.) then advance to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) during a two-step process. Install a new gasket and the upper intake manifold to the lower intake manifold. Place the upper intake manifold with fresh gaskets before installing the nine bolts loosely while connecting the intake manifold tuning valve electrical connector. Tighten the 11 water thermostat bolts using the identical two-stage fastening order. Connect the two radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connectors along with the heater hose and generator to its installation position. Connect the eight ignition coils and eight fuel injector electrical connectors after they have undergone reinstall. Secure the power steering reservoir by fastening bolts at both lower locations and the upper position. The technician should install the throttle body adapter along with the four bolts then attach the PCV hose. The EGR valve attachment to the exhaust manifold tube requires light tightening of the fittings followed by secure tightening of both upper and lower fittings. You should connect the idle air control motor with its fuel lines as well as the brake booster vacuum line and bracket the differential pressure feedback EGR connections alongside vapor management valve vacuum line and throttle position sensor connector and engine vacuum regulator connector and main vacuum harness. Energize the unit by installing the accelerator cable bracket with bolts then rejoins the throttle body cam together with the accelerator cable and speed control actuator cable and throttle return spring. Install the accelerator cable snow shield with its bolts before connecting the upper radiator hose and both the engine air cleaner and air cleaner outlet tube. The procedure ends with reconnecting the ground cable to the battery then filling and bleeding the engine cooling system.
