- Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft on 2001 Ford Mustang?A: Vehicle servicing starts with vehicle elevation support followed by wheel removal and tire removal and then removal of the rear brake disc. The service begins by draining lubricant through differential housing cover removal then it continues with the differential pinion shaft lock bolt extraction before removing the differential pinion shaft. When removing the U-washer protect the rubber O-ring present in the axle shaft groove but pushing the axle shafts inboard will make the removal easier. After extracting the rear brake anti-lock sensor without causing any damage you should proceed to extract the axle shaft. The installation requires Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or an equivalent according to Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B for the lip of the wheel bearing oil seal while safeguarding the seal from damage. The two axle shafts must be loaded with a U-washer placed on both button ends before extending the shafts outward. The differential pinion shaft must get treated with Threadlock and Sealer EOAZ-19554-AA or an equivalent WSK-M2G35 1-A5-compliant material when new lock bolts are not usable. Then carefully insert the pinion shaft into the case lock bolt hole. When completed replace the housing cover then add the precise lubricant to the rear axle followed by installing the anti-lock sensor brake and rear brakes and tire before lowering the vehicle.
