- Q: How to Service and Repair the Column Shift Cable and Bracket on 2001 Mercury Sable?A: The service repair of column shift selector lever cable and bracket starts with removal of the LH lower instrument panel trim. Use a small screwdriver from the left edge of the column to lift the shift cable loose from the shift selector lever pivot ball. Pull the shift actuator cable fitting up as you raise the locking tab for complete shift cable separation from the retaining bracket. Move to the engine area where you should first remove the cruise control actuator along with slowly pulling out the cable grommet from the dash panel. Cut off the shift cable nut from the manual control lever while lifting the locking clip and pulling on the cable until it detaches from the transmission shift cable bracket for disposal of the locking clip. Fulfill the operation by pulling the shift cable past the dash panel opening. To install everything the staff must follow the opposite removal steps while using a fresh locking clip and make suitable adjustments to the shift cable.
