2002 Ford Crown Victoria Automatic Transmission Shifter Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Floor Automatic Transmission Shifter on 2002 Ford Crown Victoria?
A: All service and repair procedures for the floor shifter must start with safety measures involving the removal of the back up power supply to avoid air bag deployment accidents and including disconnecting the battery ground cable followed by at least one-minute wait time and separating all auxiliary batteries and power supplies if present. The service begins with dissassembling the instrument panel finish panel followed by electrical connector removal. Lifting the console finish panel first allows access to the TCS harness which is detached when pushing downward on the shift handle bezel. To perform this process start by unscrewing the two shift handle retaining screws before removing the shift handle from the system. Lift the indicator bezel to extract the bulb after which the interlock cable housing clip becomes available for removal to disconnect the interlock cable. Use the correct tools to disconnect the shift cable from the shifter assembly and free the shift cable housing clip. You need to free the electrical connector push pin retainer and disconnect the electrical connector from its place. The process requires disconnecting the vacuum harness which delivers service to the parking brake release mechanism. Before extraction of the shifter mechanism, one must remove four retaining floor nuts. The installation process should follow the method in reverse order of removal steps.
