2002 Ford Excursion Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service a Rear Drive Shaft with Two Pieces on 2002 Ford Excursion?
A: The first step for two-piece driveshaft service requires vehicle elevation with support followed by indexing the driveshaft on the axle flange then disconnection from the flange by discarding bolts alongside U-joint retainers. The driveshaft needs supporting wires made from mechanics wire. Vehicle products with four-wheel drive systems or manual transmissions need index-marking on driveshaft points when attaching to transfer cases or transmission flanges before removal of retaining bolts for garbage disposal while using mechanics wire to stabilize the driveshaft. For vehicles with an automatic transmission, index-mark the output shaft to the slip yoke. To enable driveshaft assembly removal the transmission output shaft requires lowering the driveshaft assembly until it slides off while using a plugging tool to seal the extension housing from fluid leak. Clean all components and the driveshaft yoke areas from grease, dirt and rust before wiping the driveshaft center bearing rubber insulator along with its bearing without exposing them to solvent. You should inspect the slip yoke boot of the driveshaft for holes or rips before replacing it. Check the driveshaft center bearing support for normal operation and install a new support when needed. Check whether the center bearing rubber insulator shows signs of deterioration or cracking or hardening before deciding to replace it. The technician must investigate transmission and transfer case as well as axle seals for damage to install new parts when required. The slip yoke spline requires Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or equivalent ESA-M1C75-B from Ford specification for the lubrication. Drive the yellow marks present on the driveshaft tube and the rear axle flange to be in the same orientation for proper driveshaft installation. Additionally install fresh bolts and retainers. The installation ends when performing the opposite steps from removal.
