2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear parking brake cable and conduit on 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: The servicing and repairs of the rear parking brake cable and conduit should begin with a full release of the parking brake control to achieve tension relief of the parking brake system. Start by extracting the front parking brake cable and conduit before inserting a drill bit or equivalent retainer with a size of 4 mm (5/32 inch) into the parking brake control. Start by disconnecting the tire wheel assembly then remove the parking brake intermediate cable from its connector location hole before separating the left-hand parking brake rear cable conduit from the right-hand parking brake rear cable conduit at the equalizer point. When working on drum brake vehicles start by removing screws followed by extraction of the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit and the conduit clip to the LH parking brake rear cable and conduit and from the parking brake cable bracket after compressing the parking brake cable clip. When operating vehicles with rear disc brakes workers must detach the RH parking brake rear cable along with conduit from the rear parking brake cable retainer and the RH hydraulic brake line clip and parking brake cable retainer clip by unbolting the retainer clip. Disconnect the parking brake rear cable and conduit from its clip on top of the rear axle housing by releasing the retainer through the rear disc brake caliper anchor plate and detach the cable from the parking brake lever without dismounting the brake shoe. Installation begins with securing the parking brake rear cable and conduit to the parking brake lever and directing them to the anchor plate of the rear disc brake caliper for vehicles with disc brakes or fixing the cable retainer onto the backing plate and positioning the secondary brake shoe for vehicles with drum brakes. Use the parking brake rear cable and conduit to attach to the brake line clip on top of the rear axle housing before installing the parking brake cable retainer clip and bolt with a connection of the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit to the RH hydraulic brake line clip. You must hook the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit to the rear parking brake cable retainer, before connecting it to the parking brake cable bracket ensuring complete seating. Complete the procedure by linking the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit with the LH parking brake rear cable and conduit at the parking brake cable equalizer while connecting the parking brake intermediate cable to the LH parking brake rear cable and conduit. If your vehicle has air suspension it must be reactuated during this procedure then front wheels must be installed followed by front tire placement. Finally apply tension to the parking brake system through front cable and conduit tugging before removing the control retainer.
