2002 Ford Ranger Axle Shaft Parts Q&A
Q: How to Service the Rear Drive Axle Shaft and Differential with a 7.5-Inch Ring Gear on 2002 Ford Ranger?
A: A Ford 7.5-inch ring gear differential servicing process begins with vehicle suspension and wheel removal before drain of lubricant into a clean container and subsequent removal of 10 cover bolts and differential housing cover. For reusing the lubricant drain it through a clean container after removing both bolts and the differential housing cover. The procedure starts by discarding the lock bolt then extracting the shaft and removing both the rear brake drums and the differential pinion shaft. Avoid damaging the rubber O-rings on axle shaft grooves as you push axle shafts towards the interior. Extraction of the two axle shafts should happen without breaking the wheel bearing oil seal. The installation process begins with cleaning all machined surfaces of the rear axle housing and differential housing cover until they remain free of oil while simultaneously covering the rear axle interior to stop possible contamination. Apply grease onto the wheel bearing oil seal lip before putting in both axle shafts without damaging the rubber O-rings. Mount the U-washers to the buttons located on the axle shafts before pulling the shafts outwards. A new pinion shaft lock bolt might not be available but you should apply threadlock and sealer to its threads when putting in the differential pinion shaft by properly aligning it with the case lock bolt hole and attaching it with a new lock bolt. The process requires reinstalling rear brake drums followed by applying new continuous sealant around the differential housing cover with timing held between 15 minutes. If this deadline is exceeded application of new sealant becomes necessary. You should install the differential housing cover along with its bolts and proceed to add 2.4 liters (2.5 pints) of lubricant into the rear axle housing before reinstalling the wheels and tires and lowering the vehicle.
