Service and repair procedures for the rear axle shaft assembly should begin by hoisting the vehicle into NEUTRAL position then eliminating the wheel and tire assembly without disturbing brake hoses. After disc brake caliper removal through wire connecting please move onto brake disc removal. The service process starts with differential housing cover removal then drain of lubricant before extracting the differential pinion shaft by discarding the bolt. When taking out the U-washer through the axle shaft inboard movement exercise caution to maintain the U-washer's rubber O-ring in its groove intact. Use caution when taking out the axle shaft because damaging the wheel bearing oil seal is a risk. Begin axle shaft installation by greasing the wheel bearing oil seal lip then place the axle shaft without damaging the seal. Position the U-washer first before placing it on the button end of the axle shaft and then extending the axle shaft outward. Insert the differential pinion shaft before aligning its bolt hole with the case then fasten it with a fresh bolt. The brake system must be reinstalled after a new differential housing cover goes on which requires filling with proper lubricant before reinstalling the rear wheel and tire.

Use Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or an equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B.

Carefully remove the axle shaft without damaging the wheel bearing oil seal.

Remove the brake drum, brake discs, and rear disc brake calipers.

Remove the differential pinion shaft by discarding the old bolt and extracting the shaft.

Ensure not to damage the rubber O-ring in the U-washer groove while pushing the axle shaft inboard.

Carefully remove the axle shaft without damaging the wheel bearing oil seal.

Coat the threads with threadlock before installing the differential thrust plate, aligning the hole in the thrust plate shaft with the case lock bolt hole and securing it with a new differential pinion shaft lock bolt.

Install the brake drum, followed by the differential housing cover, filling it with the specified lubricant.

Discard the bolt and extract the shaft.

Lubricate the lip of the wheel bearing oil seal with Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or an equivalent that meets Ford specification ESA-M1C75-B.

Drain the lubricant after removing the differential housing cover.

Take out the differential pinion shaft by discarding the bolt and extracting the shaft.

Align the bolt hole in the shaft with the case and secure it with a new bolt tightened to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).

Do not damage the rubber O-ring in the U-washer groove while pushing the axle shaft inboard.
