2002 Lincoln Continental Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Front Shock Absorber on 2002 Lincoln Continental?
A: The suspension strut servicing process requires setting the steering column to an unlocked position at first. The air suspension switch in the RH kick panel area should be activated to disable electrical power and stop the unwanted inflation or deflation of rear air springs while hoisting or jacking or towing. Begin by opening the hood then loosening the shock tower nuts before hoisting the vehicle and taking out the tire and wheel assembly. Carefully detach the bolt before moving the front brake hose at a sufficient distance from the front shock absorber. Always handle the boot seal with care as power tools must not be used to tighten the nut because this will cause damage to bearings and seals. Before throwing away the stabilizer bar link retaining nut, remove the vinyl cover from the upper link stud. Unplug the anti-lock sensor cord and if installed the electronic actuator cord from the front shock absorber bracket while also removing the front fender splash shield by unscrewing its mounting bolts. Users should disconnect the electronic actuator cable connector along with the air suspension height sensor from the front air suspension sensor pin when equipment is installed. Release the pinch bolt combined with the nut from the front wheel knuckle while taking care both components stay inside their original positions to prevent damages to the driveshaft internal mechanisms. The front shock absorber should be lowered after removing the knuckle from its position then the shock absorber and its tower nuts can be removed together. First insert the front shock absorber into the shock tower and secure its nuts using hand power. After that raise the vehicle. Place the front wheel knuckle onto the front shock absorber while installing the new pinch bolt with the nut. The installation requires you to join the air suspension height sensor to the front air suspension sensor pin using caution around the boot seal while employing hex hold prevention to stop stud rotation during tightening. Position the stabilizer bar link to the front shock absorber before installing both retaining nuts then cover the upper link stud with vinyl material. The electronic actuator cable connector only needs to be attached when present before positioning the front fender splash shield inside the front fender and securing it with its mounting bolts. Reconnect the anti-lock sensor cable with the front shock absorber bracket and install the front shock absorber bolt. Also reinstall the electronic actuator cable if equipped on that bracket. Finish the repair by reattaching the tire and wheel component followed by vehicle lowering to place weight on tires before tightening shock absorber nuts to shock tower along with resetting the air suspension service switch.
