2002 Lincoln Continental Control Arm Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear upper control arm on 2002 Lincoln Continental?
A: Begin servicing the rear upper control arm only after disabling electrical power to the air suspension system to stop unsolicited air spring pressure or loss that could move the vehicle during maintenance. Setting the vehicle on a hoist enables safe tire and wheel removal. Danger arises when attempting to remove an air spring which contains pressure so deflation must precede all steps. Start by disconnecting the air suspension height sensor from its position on the ball stud pin on the rear suspension arm and bushing before removing the lower shock absorber mounting nut and bolt. Handle the upper ball joint-to-upper rear suspension arm nut only until loose before using a suitable tie-rod end remover to detach the ball joint and bushing from the rear suspension arm then remove the nut. The automobile requires removal of rear upper suspension arm-to-body nuts followed by bolts before extracting both rear suspension arm and bushing. Place the rear suspension arm and bushing inside the vehicle before installing both rear upper suspension arm-to-body bolts and nuts. Attach the ball joint to its place in the rear suspension arm and bushing before installing a new nut. Install the lower shock absorber mounting bolt followed by the nut before binding the air suspension height sensor onto the ball stud pin. The procedure ends with reinstituting the wheel and tire assembly followed by air spring inflation before vehicle lowering completes the process and enabling the air suspension service switch activation.
