2001 Lincoln Continental Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when servicing gas-pressurized shock absorbers on 2001 Lincoln Continental?
A: Caution sternly required when serving gas-pressurized shock absorbers because they extend automatically and using heat or fire on the shock absorber tube can cause injury to personnel. During rear shock absorber removal the lower suspension arms and air suspension height sensor need to be restrained since shock absorbers function as back suspension rebound stops. A new shock absorber will be necessary in case the electronic actuator shows evidence of noise, softness or electrical problems because the actuator operates outside of user serviceability. Before vehicle lifts and towing of air-suspended vehicles push the off-button for air suspension electrical power to shield the air springs from unexpected changes in air spring expansion or air spring deflation. Start the procedure by disabling the air suspension service switch followed by removing the side trunk trim panel then discarding the retaining clip from the mass damper. The vehicle needs to be lifted onto a hoist before taking off both wheel and tire units. Deflate the air spring before taking away components that support it because operating under pressure leads to possible personal injury. Start by disconnecting any shock absorber electrical connector along with its wiring routing retaining clips then remove the two upper shock absorber mounting bolts followed by the lower shock absorber mounting nut and bolt. Remove the shock absorber and its mounting bracket and mass damper assembly one after another. The assembly process starts by placing the rear shock absorber mounting bracket with mass damper in position after which you must elevate the absorber and perform several strokes to remove air from its working cylinder. The electronic actuator should be oriented toward the back of the vehicle and the shock absorber needs to pass through the shock tower mounting hole. Align the mounting clevis to the rear wheel spindle by compressing the shock absorber and then bolt and nut the lower shock absorber mounting hardware. Afterward install the two upper mounting bolts. Connect the shock absorber electrical connector if needed while installing the wiring retaining clips onto the lower arm. Mount the wheel and tire assembly, drop the vehicle, enable the air suspension service switch then attach the side trim panels.
