2001 Lincoln Continental Shock Absorber Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Front Shock Absorber on 2001 Lincoln Continental?
A: Service and repair procedures for the suspension strut should start with placing the steering column into the unlocked position. The operation of the air suspension system needs power shutdown through the air suspension switch in the right-hand kick panel to stop uncontrolled pressure changes in rear air springs throughout hoisting, jacking and towing operations. Start by opening the hood and backyard tower nut looseness before bringing the vehicle onto a hoist and removing tires and wheels from their position. Use a wrench to detach the bolt and move the brake hose aside from the shock absorber but maintain care to avoid sealing damage to the boot. Avoid using power tools when tightening the bolt to protect bearings and seals since they create stud rotation when you use the hex hold. The vehicle owner must remove the upper link stud vinyl cover before disposing of the stabilizer bar link retaining nut. The first step should be to remove all connectors from the front shock absorber bracket and disconnect the anti-lock sensor cable with any installed electronic actuator cables. After that, remove the front fender splash shield by extracting the mounting bolts. The wind speed reaches 5 miles per hour and remains below 25 miles per hour during the repair of the front air suspension sensor pin. Both the electronic actuator cable connector and air suspension height sensor must be detached from the pin. Disconnect the pinch bolt and nut from the front wheel knuckle while keeping the front wheel knuckle and front wheel driveshaft joint from moving outward because it could cause damages to internal driveshaft sections. Start by taking out the front wheel knuckle from the front shock absorber and partially lower the vehicle before removing its shock tower nuts and front shock absorber. Start by placing the front shock absorber inside the shock tower before you hand-tighten the shock absorber nuts while the vehicle remains raised. The user should position the front wheel knuckle onto the front shock absorber before installing a new pinch bolt and nut. To connect the air suspension height sensor with the front air suspension sensor pin maintain high care against boot seal damage while using the hex hold feature to stop stud rotation. Position the stabilizer bar link onto the front shock absorber after installation of the retaining nut then apply the vinyl cover to the upper link stud. The front fender splash shield must be installed by placing it into the front fender while securing it through mounting bolts. Reconnect electronic actuator cable connector if your system includes it. The anti-lock sensor cable as well as optional electronic actuator cable should be attached to the front shock absorber bracket followed by installation of the front brake hose bracket on the front shock absorber before bolting it into place. Position the tire and wheel assembly back onto the vehicle then lower the vehicle while weight is on the tires. Finally tighten shock absorber to shock tower nuts before turning on the air suspension service switch.
