• Q: How to service the Center Console Base with an automatic transaxle on 2002 Mercury Cougar?

  A: Before working on the floor console in vehicles with an automatic transaxle you need to disconnect the battery ground cable only when the selector lever is in neutral position. Take out the back screws from the floor console while lifting the armrest if installed or removing the rear cup holder for consoles without armrests. Press the parking brake to its full position before you take out the ashtray and lighter if equipped. Then use the power socket location to pull down the storage tray. Detaching the selector lever indicator bezel starts with unscrewing its mount and disconnecting the bulb holder. Disconnect all electrical connectors beginning with the one that controls the selector lever and remove the spacer that fits into its terminal. Remove the overdrive switch electrical connector and disconnect its terminals. Also remove the selector lever indicator bezel. Pull off the floor console by unscrewing its front screws and later disconnecting the cigar lighter and power socket electrical connections. To put the console back in place you should undo the steps from removal.
