2002 Mercury Villager Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Ignition Lock Cylinder in the Steering Column on 2002 Mercury Villager?
A: Service and repair of steering column lock starts by disconnecting the battery ground cable before removing all shrouds including upper and lower ones through screw removal. Switch the ignition to ON position before taking out the key-in-reminder switch by unscrewing the two screws. A tension spring will come loose from under the cylinder rod during ignition switch lock cylinder removal. The wheel has been removed for better visibility. Use either 3 mm (1/8 inch diameter) wire pin or small drift to locate the access hole at the bottom of the ignition switch lock cylinder housing. Depressing the retaining pin allows extraction of the lock cylinder through pulling motion. Make sure to place the tension spring under the rod of the lock cylinder before putting in the ignition switch lock cylinder. The ignition switch lock cylinder reaches full seating position within the lock housing through the retaining pin entering the access hole. After reversing the removal procedures check that the ignition switch lock cylinder operates correctly.
