2003 Ford Crown Victoria Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Non-Functional Ignition Lock Cylinder on 2003 Ford Crown Victoria?
A: The first task when repairing a failing ignition switch lock cylinder is to remove the steering wheel from the vehicle. Take off the cap from the ignition switch lock cylinder and remove the cylinder before continuing. Use a 1/8-inch diameter drill bit to eliminate the lock cylinder retaining pin and after that use a 3/8-inch diameter drill to penetrate the key slot until the ignition switch lock cylinder frees itself from its mount. Throw out the ignition lock cylinder while also dropping away the drill waste collection from the steering column. Start by removing the bearing retainer and then remove the steering column lock housing bearing and steering column lock gear and clean thoroughly the drill shavings from the steering column while inspection for damage. When you insert the lock gear during installation position its small keyhole opening at one o'clock. The installation of steering column lock components includes adding multi-purpose grease spray to cover both items before mounting the gear and bearing. The keyhole's narrow section should face one o'clock position while the tab needs to be on the three o'clock side before it gets rotated counterclockwise. Install the bearing retainer by keeping it tight until the four retention tabs enter the lock housing and proceed with putting back the steering wheel and ignition switch lock cylinder while testing its functionality. It is crucial to reactivate the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) while paying close attention to all SRS reactivation warnings and instructions so serious personal injuries can be avoided.
