2004 Ford Crown Victoria Ignition Lock Cylinder Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Non-Functional Ignition Lock Cylinder on 2004 Ford Crown Victoria?
A: Service of a broken ignition lock cylinder starts with removing the steering wheel. You should first twist off the cap from the ignition switch lock cylinder and then remove the entire cylinder from its place. Start by drilling out the lock cylinder retaining pin using a 1/8-inch diameter drill bit and then finish the process with the 3/8-inch diameter drill which will drill down the ignition lock key slot to separate the ignition switch lock cylinder. Throw away the ignition switch lock cylinder as well as all drilling waste from inside the steering column. After cleaning the steering column of drill discharge remove the bearing retainer and then remove the steering column lock housing bearing together with the steering column lock gear. Finish by inspecting for any damage throughout the process. To properly install the lock gear insert the narrow part of the keyhole toward the one o'clock position while keeping the tab inside at the three o'clock mark then rotate it by counterclockwise movement. The installation requires attaching first the steering column lock gear to the bearing while spraying them with multi-purpose grease. Firmly position the bearing retainer into the lock housing while its four retention tabs secure inside the housing before replacing the steering wheel and ignition switch lock cylinder which should function correctly. The service should complete SRS reactivation after taking all necessary safety precautions per instruction to prevent personal injury.
