2003 Ford Crown Victoria Shift Interlock Solenoid Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Column Shifter Shift Interlock Solenoid on 2003 Ford Crown Victoria?
A: A critical safety step when servicing or repairing the column shift interlock actuator is to deplete back up power followed by disconnecting the battery ground cable for one minute; additionally if equipped disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies. Begin service on the brake shift interlock actuator by first taking out the lower steering column opening finish panel screw followed by moving the parking brake release handle aside before unscrewing the panel screw and pulling outward to let go of the retaining clips. Move on to remove the five screws which fasten the lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement and the four screws from the instrument panel reinforcement brace. The first step is to disconnect the selector lever indicator cable by first loosening its screw then disconnecting it from position. The process begins with nut removal from the steering column which allows lower movement of the column. Finally, three bolts are used for separating the shift lock actuator and the transmission shift selector position insert out of the steering column. Cutting off power supply through the electrical connector will allow the removal of the shift lock actuator and transmission shift selector position insert. The installation process ends by following the removal procedures in reverse order.
