2003 Ford Excursion Transmission Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Transmission Pan on 2003 Ford Excursion?
A: Service or repair of the fluid pan requires that you set the vehicle on a hoist while keeping it in the NEUTRAL gear position. The service begins with drain plug removal to empty transmission fluid while technicians proceed to uninstall transmission fluid pan along with its gasket and transmission fluid filter. The procedure requires gentle removal of the transmission fluid filter seal due to potential transmission failure resulting from damaging the seal bore. Check whether a seal exists in the transmission fluid bore and remove it if found. The installation of new fluid filter and seal assembly needs to wait until all remnants of old fluid filter seal are removed. Tighten all transmission fluid pan bolts by using a crisscross pattern when installing both the fluid pan gasket and the fluid pan. You should reattach the transmission fluid drain plug yet handle it with care to use only the prescribed transmission fluid to stop operational problems or failure. Pour clean automatic transmission fluid until the quantity reaches 7.0 liters (7.5 quarts) through the fluid filler tube before reassembling the battery cables and starting the engine. From NEUTRAL position check if transmission engages all shifts by operating the range selector lever across all gear settings. Check the transmission fluid level and adjust its position while keeping the engine at 66 - 77°C (150 - 170°F) normal operating temperature in NEUTRAL gear mode. Also verify fluid leaks exist in this operating condition. Add fluid through increments of 0.24 liter (0.5 pint) until reaching the correct level while keeping the fluid inside the cross-hatched section of the fluid level indicator.
