2003 Ford Mustang Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing cover on 2003 Ford Mustang?
A: Start servicing and repairing the timing cover through disconnecting the battery ground cable then draining the engine cooling system. Start by taking off the crankshaft pulley followed by disconnecting the water pump pulley. After detaching the retainers you must move the power steering pump to a side and disconnect the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) tube as well as the upper radiator hose and bypass hose. Detach the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor as well as the heater water outlet tube and camshaft synchronizer assembly. The next step consists of removing the lower radiator hose and the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector followed by the wiring harness pin-type retainer and the oil filter. Detach both the retainers and water pump from the engine while paying attention to remove the hidden cap screw to protect the engine front cover from damage. Take note of the fastener locations and types before removing the engine front cover at its two dowels while discarding the gasket. Engine block inspection begins when exposing the oil pan with shop towels followed by plugging all passages and cleaning both surfaces with metal surface cleaner. Clean any last debris with compressed air before taking out the shop towels along with the plugs. Security of the engine front cover must be achieved within four minutes and the sealing area requires metal surface cleaner and air drying. Place silicone gasket base on the surface then slide in the engine front cover gasket before putting the engine front cover bolts. Differentiate between bolt number 12 and other fasteners during installation. Replace the water pump after fastening its sockets and bolts with 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.) torque force at the correct time sequence. The number 12 bolt does not participate in this installation process. Edge the new filter into position along with the wiring harness pin-type retainer and then reestablish both crankshaft position sensor electrical connection and lower radiator hose. Safely position the camshaft synchronizer assembly then install the heater water outlet tube and CMP sensor until the electrical connector connects to the two components. Reinstall the bypass hose and upper radiator hose as the first procedures followed by the EGR tube and power steering pump and finally water pump pulley and crankshaft pulley. The last step comprises draining the engine oil followed by installing fresh engine oil before cooling system filling and reconnecting the battery ground cable.
